Since 2021, Farmer & Morris Law, PLLC, has awarded our Farmer & Morris Law, PLLC, Volunteer Service Scholarship annually to a law school student or applicant who embodies the spirit of volunteerism that strengthens communities.
We’re proud to announce that we have awarded our 2025 Farmer & Morris Law, PLLC, Volunteer Service Scholarship to Vanderbilt Law School student Amandi Li. Our $2,500 scholarship will allow Li to focus more fully on her studies and professional development, she says.
Our team of North Carolina personal injury lawyers and other legal professionals applauds Li’s dedication to community service. We are hopeful that our scholarship will support Li as she continues her legal education.
Transforming a Family’s Crisis into a Calling
In her essay for our scholarship, Li described experiences relating to when her father was detained in China while on a business trip. Weeks after being detailed, Li’s father suffered a stroke in detention. She and her mother were also denied access to his medical records, legal counsel, and even basic updates on his condition.
“As their only child, I suddenly became the financial head of my household, my father’s advocate, and my family’s connection to a system that gave us silence instead of answers,” Li wrote.
To Li, helping her father in his time of need meant refusing to accept that silence, she noted in her essay. As such, while balancing her first year of law school, she researched extradition law late at night, drafted letters to embassies, and coordinated with human rights organizations. She also reached out to journalists and was able to bring her father’s story to The New York Times.
Law Can Be a Lifeline for Families in Crisis
Through the experiences with her father, Li learned that “helping someone in need does not always mean you can fix the problem, but it does mean you can fight for them to be seen and heard,” she wrote in her scholarship essay.
Li also discovered how law can matter in the most human sense. “I realized that advocacy is not just about legal arguments but about persistence, strategy, and the courage to stand in silence until institutions are forced to respond,” she noted in her essay.
In her coursework at Vanderbilt Law School and in her personal experiences, Li has seen how law can serve as a protective mechanism and strategic instrument for change. Moving forward, she’s inspired to explore how individuals and institutions can use legal frameworks to address complex global challenges, especially where traditional enforcement mechanisms fall short.

A Legal Mission Comes Into Focus
Li’s biggest inspiration is her family, specifically her father, as his experiences have shaped her understanding of resilience, justice, and the real-world consequences of legal systems. “Watching him navigate adversity has strengthened my commitment to pursuing a legal career grounded in integrity and purpose,” she says.
In the future, Li wants to become a lawyer who uses the law to amplify the voices that would otherwise go unheard. She intends to continue building the nonprofit that she founded in her father’s name to support families confronting wrongful detentions abroad and dedicate herself to pro bono service in local communities that face barriers to justice.
Most importantly, Li wants to be “the kind of attorney who listens first, advocates relentlessly, and never forgets that behind every case file is a person whose life depends on being seen,” she wrote in her scholarship essay.
The Pursuit of Legal Excellence Continues
For Li, the 2025 Farmer & Morris Law Volunteer Service Scholarship is both an “honor and a meaningful source of support,” she says. It reinforces her commitment to public service, reminds her of the work she hopes to do, and motivates her to continue pursuing excellence and to use her legal training to make a tangible impact.
As a Vanderbilt Law School student, Li’s focus is corporate law, specifically in the areas of asset management and mergers and acquisitions. Her coursework has emphasized both the technical and strategic aspects of business law, and she is developing a foundation in how legal frameworks shape business decisions and financial markets.
Following her graduation, Li plans to pursue a career in BigLaw, where she can continue to develop her skills in corporate practice. She says that she is interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the business side of legal practice and establishing a career that combines legal expertise with commercial awareness.
