One of the most important mindsets an attorney can have is a volunteer mindset. This motivation shows a drive to help those in need even when you stand to gain nothing substantial for yourself. That’s why Farmer & Morris Law created its Volunteer Service Scholarship for law school students.
Boaz Campbell has been selected as the winner of the $2,500 award for 2021. A law student at William and Mary, Campbell wrote about his experiences serving as a volunteer with his church.
“Whether it be volunteering at a deaf orphanage in Peru, serving at a soup kitchen for the elderly in Honduras, or working at clinics in Romania’s Romani churches, my mind was opened and molded by each new experience,” wrote Campbell.
The Experience That Inspired a Career
Recently, Boaz Campbell decided to study immigration law. The decision came as a direct result of his work volunteering in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. There, he and his church group served the underserved Tarahumara people, who are indigenous to the Chihuahua region.
Campbell wrote about how his interactions with these people tended to share a similar thread. “Every conversation shared a common theme: deportation from the U.S., separation from their family, and hopelessness.”
Campbell spent time reflecting on these conversations, studying immigration law, and doing research on the U.S. immigration process. This inspired him to spend his life helping people who wish to come into the country legally in order to better their lives and those of their families.
